Tails of the Sword of Vengeance: The Oracle

Travel to Hodgedom Mountain for some answers from the Oracle.

The flying ship parts the grey clouds of the sky above the mountains of the Northern Range... and drifts slowly towards the fabled Hodgedom Mountain. The party are breath taken for a moment, taking in the scene.

Just then, a presence speaks: "Know yea who have claimed artifacts from the Tower of Vengeance that a terrible curse lies with thee. Until the end of time will your eyes burn and your blood boil at the sight of a target of vengeance. Know yea that thou must take any being's life to avenge the lost souls of the Land of the Unliving with the sword named Vengeance or never shall yea rest... Know yea the horrible curse, and know yea of my geas to guide yea to the targets of that great sword and the waiting souls of the unavenged... Know yea and beware..."

The figure that spoke is also piloting the ship from the upper deck (directly at the wheel). It is a rotting animated corpse with rags of clothing clinging about its body. The figure seems solid enough but ignores most questions and other talk direct at it, accept for an occasional snide remark. It also seems quite immune to attacks of any but the magical nature. The travelers board the ship (believing it to be their destiny) and command the captain to take them to the Oracle.

Later, the ship descends and floats next to an icy cliff near a large cave entrance. A trail is clearly visible winding all the way down the mountain. There are several groups and single travelers slowly working their way upwards. The cave entrance has two large marble pillars flanking it. At the top of the cave entrance carved into the bare rock and covered with ice an eye looks down on seekers of the Oracle. The ice makes it appear almost alive.

There is an additional snow covered trail leading to the now icy cliff where the ship has landed. The remnants of a fire are iced over. There is no where to go except down, towards the entrance.

Just inside the cave are six chanting priests in yellow and read robes, three on each side. One of them steps forward and welcomes the party. He offers some refreshments and a place to sit. He mentions that the Oracle will see them shortly, but one at a time.

The Oracle first sees Ograth the mercenary. After entering, the doors set into the stone shut silently. Ograth sees the Oracle, an extremely old man with long thin white hair sitting on a mound of pillows. Roughly then feet in front of him is a small gathering of objects; candles, statues, some pieces of shiny rock. Offerings.

The Oracle looked up after a few seconds, staring at a point about a foot behind his right shoulder and asked, "What knowledge do you seek?"

No matter what the question, the oracle answers with one of the following riddles (already knowing the travelers destiny):

  • Shining very bright that which gleams is not always right. Seek the Gates of Twilight for your true answer.
  • Burning read, vapors rise, do not accept white lies. Massed armies in a Keep, Nervex knows.
  • From the West do they come, some by twos and one by one. Light the Dyrnus, spill the blood for your answer. [Box]
  • Jackals come, feed and lie. Skin their hides for Durnazie. Thoth Hogom holds the key.
  • The place where echoes sleep, canyon of yesterday. The totem of Yrrg holds the answer. [Curse]
  • In a frosted future Halreg rules with an iron fist. Lies Dulrich, only she holds the true answer.
  • Beneath the mountains where dwarves once ruled, Ulnaar has the Book of Lies. Burn it in the Great Well for your answer.
  • Islands asunder, like a broken plate. Rynor seeks your answer but chooses not to find it. Fraynor holds the lock and key. [Gauntlet] "Your answer is given. Only few pilgrims will surely uncover the truth."

The other party members are given the same treatment, until El enters. Outside there is a long wait and then a scream which is quickly cut off. The Oracle has become the first victim of the Sword of Vengeance by El's hands.

"Assassins!" bellows a priest. El emerges from the cave with a disbelieving looking on his face. Something soars from the Sword of Vengeance into the sky and Guide reappears with their craft for a quick escape.

There is a ceremony and a new body chosen for the spirit of the Oracle to embody. For it is not the physical form of the Oracle that gives him great knowledge, but a spirit passed on from one host to the next.

    Accusation, argument, confrontation, denial.
    Avalanche/storm, bedding down, revelation.
    Haunted dreams
